These jerks live a few houses down from my parents. They exhibit classic asshole behaviors such as, but not limited to: owning the ugliest house on the street; barely maintaining their property; firing mortar fireworks all day every day and into the late evening during the summer (guy lives there with a girlfriend that supports him not working with spam mailing list revenues); verbally abusing other neighbors; having the police called on them.

Unfortunately though they do also have this somewhat interesting Daimler DS420 limousine in their driveway, which I've always wanted to get a good look at. Although in classic asshole fashion it's rotting in place and hasn't moved a long while.

Sounds like you need to pull some epic neighbor-pranks.

And film them.

And post them.

Unfortunately these are the types of assholes that both feed on retaliation for their own assholish behavior and would likely respond in an entirely inappropriate/illegal/dangerous way. Not the the relatively fun loving type of asshole : /

No? Why do you ask?

Because they live in a neighborhood full of giant two garage castles where assholes have so much money to flush down the toilet that they can leave their limos outside rotting without giving a fuck.

I realize now from this picture it looks like this is from some ridiculous affluent suburb of a huge metropolitan area, but that couldn't be further from the truth. It's a tiny dead end road in a small town in Michigan, and most (not all) of the dozen or so houses on it are modest 70s ranch style homes. The reason this house is considered the ugliest on the street is because of its ostentatiousness, which is completely incongruous with the rest of the neighborhood. These people also leave their backyard completely un–mowed. The grass is literally waist high in some spots.

That's pretty much what it's full of, parts of a house. That's why they keep the car outside. Sometimes when they leave it open, it is literally full of garbage. They weren't home when this picture was taken so you can't say the other cars they leave in the driveway.

I've always been wondering about that; why is it so important in America to mow your lawn?
Isn't that the opposite of freedom? Shouldn't you be able do do whatever you want with your lawn?

The only explanation I can think of is the impact it can have on land value for the neighborhood, but an unmowed lawn can ' t make that much of an impact. Can it?

It depends on where you live. There are some places where you are mandated to pay a fee to have a company mow your lawn for you. There are some places that will kick you out if you don't mow your lawn. If you live out in the country you can do whatever the hell you want. Most places you don't have to do anything, but there's an amount of yard maintenance that people expect. I think the reason one should generally abide by this is that your actions will affect your neighbors' ability to enjoy their property (if you're interfering with their view for instance) and as you said, potentially affecting the value of the surrounding properties. The extent to which the latter occurs depends on the neighborhood you're in. In some places, usually the ones that will kick you out, it can have a fairly substantial impact. Those places are usually filled with scumbags and I try and avoid them when possible.

Ultimately this person is free to do as they choose with their lawn so long as they don't enter into a prior agreement regarding the maintenance, but that doesn't mean they are free from the criticism of their neighbors. They are also free to live wherever they choose. If they want to be able to keep an unmoved lawn and not hear any gripes about it, they are free to move to the countryside if they are willing to make the necessary compromises to do so.

I see. The kicking-out neighborhoods are a bit extreme, but for the normal people... I was a bit skeptical towards mowing your lawn at first, as is the tradition in Europe to take everything american with a grain of salt, but this makes sense, and if its basically like a tradition or a custom, then yes, your parents shitty Daimler-owning neighbors should mow it up more often...

The people who agree to live in the kicking–out type neighborhoods are very very rarely the type of people who don't follow the rules they agree to. The rules also pretty much only exist to make sure people who don't follow the rules don't live there (very exclusionary). I never really thought of lawn mowing as a tradition or a custom but I guess it is. At least in my family, we always use the lawn as a place to socialize, play lawn games, that sort of thing, and at least in my opinion tidy cut grass is a bit more conducive to that. Neat perspective though.
